Two long-haired Chihuahuas with dietary issues are the inspiration behind Sammi & Sofie’s Wholesome Treats in Oriental, NC. Founder Tonya Smith lost her first dog, an outgoing and friendly long-haired Chihuahua named Chloe, to a dog attack at the young age of 10 months. Heartbroken and with an empty house, Tonya decided to search for a new dog. She found two little girl brown long-haired Chihuahua sisters who were four months old and located in Missouri.
Immediately after bringing Sammi and Sofie home, Tonya noticed they were not like Chloe. They were not happy or playful. Instead, they would cower to her touch, were not house trained, had never been on a leash and were afraid to walk outside on the grass. We realized they had come from a puppy mill.
At their first vet visit, Tonya was amazed to learn her new puppies had fleas and were sick and had to be given medication. Over the next year, Sammi and Sofie were constantly going to the vet to get medication for their upset stomachs. Finally, Tonya learned they had an intolerance to gluten.
Now 7 years old, Sammi and Sofie have learned better social skills but are still wary of new people. Sammi is short for Samantha and she does not like her ears combed so her hair is trimmed short. Sofie loves her hair long and she will sit and get it combed all day long. They are registered service dogs in North Carolina and aid Tonya with her PTSD. They eat non-grain food with salmon and turkey. But Tonya still wanted to give her fur babies special treats, so she developed a wholesome biscuit treat that is gluten-free.
